In October, Spring Lake Drama Club performed “Witches?! In Salem?!” The show transported audiences to the 1600s, and this comedy drama had the audience laughing, gasping and applauding from start to finish.
The play is a sarcasm of Arthur Miller’s 1953 play “The Crucible,” and follows a small town of villagers who get caught in many accusations of being a witch. Under the direction of Shaylynn Chalupa, the cast delivered an amazing show and perfectly acted the comedy and intensity of the trials.
Senior Isla Engelhard. played Jenny, an eight-grader who loves history and whose school project tells the satirical tale. After her final fall play, Engelhard said, “Over my eight years here, I have found family within the family theater program, and with the help of our amazing directors, I have developed my skills immensely.”
Senior Mia Nardi, who played Goody, an old woman accused of witchcraft, added of her time in the program, “So much time and effort goes into our productions. It’s incredible to watch a play go from words in a script to a real story being told. Being on stage in front of an audience, putting on a show with your friends, it’s truly special and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
The cast worked tirelessly to execute the intense show as the tech crew assembled an amazing set that brought colonial Salem to life with props and backgrounds. This hard work behind the scenes gave the show its personality and immersive effect.
What made “Witches?! In Salem?!” The special wasn’t how funny it was, but the teamwork that went into the show and how much effort the Drama Club puts in to perform a good show for their friends and family.
The seniors have yet to perform their last show, the spring musical, which has yet to be announced and cast.
