Using the data provided by the survey sent out to all students last week, here’s how our very own Spring Lake High School students spent their Halloween 2024.
When you think of Halloween, the first thing most people would think about is what they plan to dress up as on this cherished night. As everyone knows, Halloween is a night that gives you an excuse to dress as another person, your favorite character, or a funny thing that you wouldn’t normally think to dress up as.
This year, 68% of our participants said they were planning to dress up for Halloween. Their costumes include pirates, Ghostface, Post Malone, Vampires, the Morton Salt girl, and many more creative individual costumes. Some students also listed couples/group costumes which included Joker and Harley Quinn, Mordecai and Rigby from “The Regular Show,” a deer and a hunter, Sally and Lightning McQueen from “Cars,” as well as a bear and Goldylocks.
When it comes to trick-or-treating, many say that high schoolers are too old to participate, but are we really? 32% of surveyed students said they planned to go out trick-or-treating this year, and another 28% said they were still undecided but were considering the activity. And as every child or former child knows, the best part of trick-or-treating is the bags of candy you get to bring home at the end of the night. From the given options Spring Lake students overwhelmingly said their favorite Halloween candy was Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup.
Some of the other notorious Halloween activities like carving pumpkins are once again extremely popular. 58% of students said they either had or are planning to carve pumpkins this year. Did you know that this long standing Halloween tradition became popularized in the 19th-20th centuries due to a large influx of Irish immigrants coming to America and sharing their cultural traditions and stories with others? Haunted houses are another big activity for families, friends, and even clubs/teams to experience together. While 37% of students said not being voluntarily terrified this year, 38% said they were absolutely planning to attend one. Senior Alexis Dill who recently attended “The Haunt” in Wyoming, one the most popular Halloween attractions in our area.
“It was super fun,” Dill said.” I recommend it if you like a good scare, or even if you don’t go anyway.”
Planning to stay in on Halloween? We asked students opinions of horror movies during the Halloween season. 72% of students said they enjoy this genre – but 28% said they absolutely did not.
