The Spring Lake Fight Song has been an important part of our school district’s history for decades. While the band masters the notes, everyone at our school is at least familiar with the tune. So, where did it come from?
The school fight song originated in the 1960s and was written by Harold Luoma, the original Spring Lake High School band director. Usually, the first band director of a district chooses a fight song already written and used by a college, specifically their favorite. However, Luoma decided to write our district our very own school song.
“It’s pretty similar to other school fight songs but is in a tough key signature for students,” Band Director Mark Grevengoed explained. “The woodwind and trombone parts are extremely difficult versus the other parts.”
Luoma went on to leave Spring Lake Schools in 1968 to work on building the band at Muskegon Community College, though long-time Spring Lake directors Mike Truszkowski and revengoed had met him a handful of times during their careers. Most notably, he came to a football game and conducted the school song in 2005.
Luoma left a great legacy for our school to pass on. Grevengoed added, “Having our own school song is a source of pride and tradition for Spring Lake, and it’s great teaching the younger students about the history of our great band program because of it.”
