Spring Lake is lucky to have an amazing aquatic center attached to the school. However, not all students have access to use it. Many students, including student leadership, are arguing for improved access that would benefit all students.
A student council committee recently formed to raise the issue about student access to the aquatic center. Patrick Goran, president of the Junior Class, heads the committee.
“Currently, the new FAC committee through the student council is working with the FAC to provide more activities for student members,” Goran said. “An idea we had was to set time aside in the multipurpose gym for an after school basketball club/pickup game, similar to how pickleball is set up that would be drop-in.”
Goran said there has been discussion of integration of lifeguard training into school courses, which he said would be a “resume builder” and help students seek job opportunities.
“Lifeguarding also gives students the opportunity to have necessary work experience and save for college in the future,” Goran added.
The Laker Anchor staff agrees that access to fitness and training opportunities should be accessible for all Laker students.
The cost of the FAC membership for students is prohibitive for many, including student athletes.
A student athlete discount is one proactive idea. Making the aquatic center more accessible to all students would help students reach their athletic goals, along with encouraging them to be more involved. Additionally, allowing students to go to a gym with limited to no cost can promote healthy habits throughout their lives.
The student use of the FAC would also have the opportunity to increase academic learning and focus in the classrooms. Many studies have shown that exercise improves academics because it helps brain function.
High School Principal Ben Armey recently told the Anchor staff about the new fieldhouse, which is set to open August 11. He said he expects the facility will offer more opportunities for students to access equipment, including during the school day.
