Spring Lake High School is excited to welcome a whole new host of business classes into the high school and a new teacher to help grow the program. Starting this year, students can take four new business offerings, with Kelly Heavelin and new teacher David Binkley to teach them.
“I hope that more students will be introduced to new business concepts, which will help them in their future,” Heavilin said.
With the addition of Binkley, Spring Lake was able to add these classes for the 2025-26 school year: marketing, management and leadership, entrepreneurship, and computer applications.
“With business being one of the most acquired degrees in post-high school graduate programs, it’s very important for high schools to offer business classes,” Heavelin said. Heavilin also expresses how useful business education is for not just students interested in majoring in business, but beneficial for everyone and every job. “You’re always going to have a manager,” she added.
Overall, this year’s students, staff, and community members express excitement about the new opportunities for students to engage and learn what the new program has to offer.
Welcoming David Binkley
The Spring Lake High School community is happy to welcome David Binkley, the newest addition to our staff. Binkley grew up in Warren, Michigan, and attended Warren Lincoln High School.
Binkley continued his education by attending Wayne State University for his undergrad, and afterward Saginaw Valley State, where he majored in business and minored in computer science. He also previously worked at West Ottawa High School, where he taught several other business-focused classes.
Binkley was attracted to this job because of how tight-knit the community is, having previously taught in a large district. “Smaller schools are warmer, more of a family kind of thing,” Binkley said.
One of Binkley’s favorite activities is watching television with his daughters, Charlotte and Lily. Right now, he enjoys watching “My Life with the Walter Boys.” He also loves to read. Some of his favorite book series are “Game of Thrones” and “the “Sith” series.
Although teaching is great, Binkley says his absolute favorite part of being a teacher is “getting to know the kids, and getting to help them become who they are.”
At Spring Lake, Binkley teaches marketing, management and leadership, entrepreneurship, and computer applications. His favorite class he’s taught so far is marketing. “Marketing is what makes business go,” Binkley said. “You can’t talk about any business without talking about marketing.”
