For the Battle of the Bayou, the Rotary Interact Club at Spring Lake High School did a can drive fundraiser. Usually the club conducts a tailgate, and has events at the game, but due to COVID-19 and the game being held at Fruitport, the club had to improvise to raise funds for Helen Devos Children’s Hospital.

A can drive fundraiser was proposed, and got accepted by administration. The club received a donation of a dumpster from Bin There Dump That, and the cans started pouring in. Leaders and members of Interact promoted the can drive on social media.

By posting in local Facebook groups, and opening the can drive to the community, the club saw a great response. “I think the social media influence is what made the drive so successful. We appreciate everyone in the community really showing out to make a difference for the kids at Helen Devos Children’s Hospital”, says Sarah Sevener, co-treasurer of the Interact Club.

The drive lasted about a week, and the club saw many days where the dumpster was overflowing with cans. Thanks to the help of members, leaders, and seniors, the club was able to return all the cans by the deadline, and even make some trips mid-drive.

Overall, the can drive raised $1,300 dollars for Helen Devos Children’s Hospital! Interact looks forward to hosting other community service projects throughout the school year to give back to the community that gives so much to us.
