The Spring Lake Girls Swim and Dive team started in late August and ended just this month. As one of many varsity fall sports, the team worked extremely hard this season to compete well in its division. With over 30 girls this year, the team did exceptionally well at its two-day conference.
The girls’ first meet, a tri-meet, was held at Hamilton. They placed 2nd with a score of 82 to 102 against Traverse City and 107 to 77 against East Kentwood. One of the team captains, Hannah Brown, swam a 500-yard freestyle in 5:42 minutes, setting a pool record and taking 1st for the Lakers.
The next three meets after that were against Grandville, Northview, Allegan, and South Haven. Even though the Lakers fought hard and lost those, they made a comeback by winning three meets in a row.
A handful of girls swam to represent Spring Lake at the D3 Invitational on Saturday, September 28th held at the Holland Aquatic Center. Ellie Adams, a junior, swam and got bronze and gold medals at the invitational. Her 500-yard freestyle and 200-medley relay got the team ahead.
This year, the swim conference was held at Hamilton High School against seven different schools. On the first day of the meet, the Spring Lake 200 free and 400 free relays took first. Some individual events that took first were swam by Hannah Brown, Ellie Adams, and Sadie VanderHeide. On the second day, the pressure was on. Hannah Brown and Ellie Adams took home first-place medals while many other Lakers took home bronze and silver. The final score of the Lakers was 333, and they took home 2nd to end the 2024 season.
Many state times were made during the season, and even though the regular season is over, the state qualifiers are practicing harder than ever to be victorious. Go Lakers!
