Spring Lake Bands took their 2024 show, “Beacon of Light”, in addition to football games, to band competitions around the state, to compete against other schools. The marching band started in June/July with percussion rehearsals and band camp, and their season ended with State Finals and the Huddle this month.
Spring Lake Marching Band’s show this year was entitled “Beacon of Light” and included the musical selections of “Come Sail Away” by Styx, “Lux Aeterna” by Edward Elgar, “Sailing” by Christoper Cross, and “Goin’ Home” by Dvorak. This year’s show was the most complex show they have ever performed, but they still had a great season.
At marching band invitationals, bands are judged on various aspects, including music, visual effects, general effects, percussion, color guard, and more. They receive a score out of 100 and caption awards for being the best at an aspect of their flight. This year, the marching band competed in the Scholastic circuit, with their local show in Grand Haven, and the much more competitive circuit, MCBA, for the remainder of their shows.
The marching band’s first competition was the Grand Haven Marching Band Invitational on September 28. They took home first place in their flight and overall grand champions, scoring 85.4.
The band then traveled to and performed at the Sparta Invitational, the first MCBA show of this season. They placed first in their flight with a score of 73.95 and took home the caption awards of best music, best visual, best general effect, best percussion, and best color guard.
After the Sparta Invitational, the band performed at the Rockford Invitational, placing second in their flight by only 0.15 points. They had a score of 78.05 and took home the caption awards for best music and best percussion
On October 26, the marching band performed at the MCBA Flight IV Preliminary Contest. They put on a great performance and finished in 4th place, qualifying for State Finals.
On November 2, the band traveled to Ford Field in Detroit for their State Finals Performance. The band put on their best show of the season and competed against many other bands. The Spring Lake High School Marching Band finished their season, taking 4th place with a score of 80.30 and the award for best percussion, a huge achievement.
On November 14, the marching band ended their season with their indoor marching show, “The Huddle.” They performed many pep band tunes and their show music in the high school auditorium. The show celebrated the entire band and the seniors, as it was their last high school marching band season. The band put on great shows this year that people in our community and outside it loved, and they ended their marching season on a high note.
