Thanksgiving is celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday of November. Spring Lake High School will begin their holiday break on Nov. 27. Every family celebrates Thanksgiving differently, which led to a poll going out to the students asking what their favorites are during the holiday.
Thanksgiving is known for such a wide variety of foods including turkey, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, yam casserole, cranberry sauce, and so much more. Thirty-four percent of participants stated their favorite Thanksgiving food is mashed potatoes and gravy, 21% of participants included stuffing as their favorite food, and 15% stated they enjoy cranberry relish the most.
After a huge Thanksgiving feast, it is a given to enjoy a slice of pie. Almost 50% of students decided on classic pumpkin pie being their favorite. Pumpkin pie takes about an hour and a half to prepare, with 35 minutes of preparation and 55 minutes in the oven. It contains simple ingredients of pie crust, pumpkin puree, eggs, evaporated milk, brown sugar, and a variety of spices. Pumpkin pie is not the only pie to enjoy, students stated that they enjoy other pies such as pecan, cherry, apple pie, and much more.
The unique part about Thanksgiving are the traditions everyone has in their family. Thirty-nine percent of participants said their favorite thing to do on Thanksgiving is to see their family, 26% of participants said they enjoy watching football games, 19% of participants said cooking/baking is their favorite, and only 11% of participants said they enjoy watching the classic Macy Thanksgiving Parade, which will be on TV from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Thanksgiving day.
One individual student of Spring Lake High School, Gillian McDonald, stated that her family has a unique tradition of always getting their Christmas tree on Thanksgiving.
The Detroit Lions football team is a fan favorite in Michigan. In past years the Lions have faced overall low winning seasons. This past season of 2023, the Lions were one game away from going into the Superbowl, making huge improvements compared to past years. This year the Lions current record is 9-1.
