Monday, Jan. 20, marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which occurs every year on the third Monday of January.
MLK Day is a day to remember both the man he was and the message he spent his life sharing. To help raise awareness and continue his legacy, Spring Lake High School is spending the week of the 20th recognizing students who reach out to those around them and are active in the community.
“It’s about smiling at a person in the hallway because you don’t know they may have had the worst day of their life yesterday,” said Media Center Specialist Laurie Dreager.
Dreager has compiled pictures of students at school and in the community who embody Dr. King’s message. These pictures will be shown on TVs around the school.
There is also a slide show that Dreager has asked seminar teachers to talk about with their seminar class on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
Most importantly, the week is to reach out to others with kindness and compassion like Dr. King would have.
Dr. King was a figurehead for human and civil rights activism using nonviolence. He preached his message until his assassination on April 4, 1968.
“Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that,” – Dr. Martin Luther King, “Loving Your Enemies” 1957.
