Last year, when community members opened up the 2024 Spring Lake High School Yearbook and flipped to the Boys varsity swim page, many people were left wondering what they were doing in their team photo. The roster photo highlighted on the page showed the team in the Aquatic Center pool wearing nice button-up shirts and ties.
However, the same questions you had about that decision last year may have also been shared with those who opened up their 1979 yearbook. Upon looking through old books, we noticed something that stood out and looked familiar, the varsity Boys Swim Team in the pool while in dress clothes.
Regarding the decision to have the boys do this in 2024, current swim coach Mick Homan told us, “I have in-water team pictures at all the schools I have coached at. It’s something different and fun. Many teams throughout the state have done this.” He also shared that he was not aware of the fact a previous team at Spring Lake had a similar team photo.
In regards to the 1979 edition, we don’t have many answers as to how this came about due to the fact that it is only in this yearbook. This is an example of the times where we do not always have the answers but it is still interesting to look into.
So, while there was no connection in this instance, it is still good to look to the past and see if there’s anything connecting us to those who have come before us, even if it is something as small as a photo.
