Spring Lake High School’s BPA (Business Professionals of America) club consists of many hard-working individuals who recently competed to make nationals. Although all of the members put in a good effort, only one of the Laker teams and two individuals qualified for nationals: Broadcast News and Business Law and Ethics. The Broadcast News team is made up of juniors Kamdyn Burns, Carly Llewellyn, Kayla Purvis, and Lily Schafer. The Lakers who qualified for the Business Law and Ethics individual event are sophomores Ava Laug and Delaney Decker. Only the top two teams in each state qualify for nationals, and the top ten individuals in each state qualify for individual events.
According to Mrs. Heavilin, leader of BPA, in “2019 we had one student qualify” for nationals. However, due to COVID-19, this year’s competition was virtual, which made it “more feasible for our students to compete” to make nationals. Past competitions kept students at the state level due to time constraints, which was not a problem this year, as the competition was virtual.
Usually, the BPA nationals are held in a different U.S. city every year. This year it was going to be in Orlando; however, it was switched to all virtual to accommodate COVID-19. Mrs. Heavilin shared a bit of what the conference will entail: “The National conference includes the leadership workshops including a panel session with business professionals in addition to the competitions.”
The BPA National conference will run from April 26-May 9. We wish the Spring Lake competitors the best of luck in this competition!
