Spring Lake High School students participated in a brain break on Wednesday May 13 during seminar time. The purpose of this brain break was to give students a break while spring is an academically heavy time with AP exams and state testing.
Students were encouraged to participate in one or more activity choices during the duration of the brain break: yoga, pickleball, therapy dogs, nature walk, silent reading/studying, choreographed stretching, Scrabble, coloring, movie, open gym, and video games. There was a wide variety of activities, so everyone used the brain break for their needs.
Students share what their top 3 choices were:
- A good way to release stress is by being active. SLHS math teacher and Jazzersizze workout instructor, Mrs. Johnson led the Lakers in a choreographed stretching exercise. This helped the students relieve their stress while having fun!
- Mrs. Guterriez led pickleball games in the gym. As pickleball is getting popular, many students participated in this activity and enjoyed the break from school to play.
- A fan favorite activity was spending time with the therapy dogs: Bella and Carl. Bella is a golden retriever and Carl is a huskie. Students spent time playing and meeting the dogs outside by the softball field.
A special thanks to SLHS counselor, Julia Smith, for putting this brain break into practice. She titled it a “Mental Health Brain Break,” while expressing “whatever you choose, take time for you!” to the students.
Junior Allie Witte shares, “I think it was a fun experience to spend seminar doing something different than what we usually do. It was especially nice to be able to take a break from school work.”
