Bill Core is a familiar face for many past and present Spring Lake students. Along with being a veteran teacher who retired at the end of last year after 38 years of teaching in Spring Lake, he has also been a long standing and respected coach.
It seems that all of his work has paid off, as Coach Core was recently inducted into the MHSSCA Hall of Fame.
With 30 years of varsity softball seasons, Spring Lake became one of the most respected softball programs thanks to Core.
“I am definitely honored and humbled by being recognized by the MHSSCA and inducted into the Hall of Fame,” Core told the Anchor. “But you do not achieve this honor alone. The formula for being a Hall of Fame member is longevity plus good players plus good assistants plus a supportive family.”
Although Core has not coached softball in recent years, he is continuing his presence in Spring Lake athletics by coaching as head coach for both varsity boys basketball and baseball. You may also continue to hear his voice on the radio during football and basketball seasons.
In 2025, Core saw the Lakers varsity baseball dominate during the season (30-3) to lose in the district round, while in 2024, the team made it to the state title game. In a long career, Core is still helping teams reach their potential.
“Coaching is coaching,” said Core, “ I believe that there are a few characteristics that a coach needs that may help them be successful. Being organized and consistent, a good communicator, and surrounding yourself with good people.”
