Although the weather doesnt show it, spring is arriving, and as spring begins, so do some of Spring Lake’s great sports. Lakers compete in sports from track to tennis throughout the months of March and June.
One of the biggest draws for students is Track and Field. Last year, the track team was able to send seven athletes to the state championships. While there, four All-State titles were achieved.
Head Coach Marina Samp said, “I am most excited to see what this team can accomplish. We have a great group with a lot of talent who like to have fun along the way!”
The Laker track team plans on attending the state meet at the end of the season, and hopes to have even more All-State athletes this year.
Another sport gearing up for the season is girls tennis. For the second year in a row, tryouts were a major commitment, with challenge matches each morning in Holland at 5:30 a.m. Students trying out reported waking up before 4 a.m. to make it there, and the tryouts lasted more than a week amid tight competition.
Senior Tersa Groendyke, who is playing on varsity, said, “Everyone looked great at tryouts, I’m super excited for this season. I think everyone will be very successful.”
Last year the entire tennis team qualified for the state championship, which was a huge achievement for their team, and they plan on doing it again this year.
The Lakers are exhilerated to show off the hard work and dedication they put into these sports. With the bar set high from successful past seasons, this year feels like a great opportunity to push above and beyond.
