The Spring Lake varsity girls basketball team put together an impressive season, highlighted by a third-place finish in the OK Black Conference and a third consecutive district championship. The conference finish marked an improvement from last year and showed the team’s growth against tough league competition.
Winning districts remains a major goal for the program each year. The Lakers proved they could compete with some of the top teams in the state, playing close games against strong schools such as Grand Haven, West Catholic, Covenant Christian and Holland Christian.
“This is always an important step in our postseason journey,” said head coach Cori Geoghan. “One of our team goals every year is to win districts. In order to reach regionals and continue in the state playoffs, you first have to take care of business in districts.”
Several players stood out this season. Senior captain Alex Botbyl earned OK Black All-Conference honors and set school records for blocked shots in a season (44) and career (75). She will continue her basketball career at Albion College.
Sophomore Kloe George led the team in school with 12 points per game, while also leading in assists and playing strong perimeter defense. She also earned OK Black All-Conference honors.
Junior point guard Lexi Baker played a key role handling the ball and defending opposing guards, earning OK Black All-Conference Honorable Mention.
With another district title and continued improvement in conference play, the Spring Lake girls basketball team continues to build a reputation as one of the area’s most competitive teams.
