Ever wonder what we do in yearbook class? Here is a summary of what a normal day looks like being a member of the yearbook class.
To make the yearbook, we use Yearbook Avenue, which is a website through Jostens. It allows us to lay out pages, add quotes, pictures, and clipart.
At the beginning of each trimester, each student is assigned a few pages to create in the yearbook. That student is in charge of getting all of the pictures and quotes that are needed for that page.
Chelsea McConnell, the theme designer, said, “I love getting to design the pages while also working with other students in the class.”
Students can check out cameras to take pictures of different sporting events, the theater, or general pictures of people around the school.
Another major responsibility in the class is writing articles for The Laker Anchor. A list of article ideas is written, and then students can claim which article they would like to write, with a two-week deadline. They are also given the option to think of a story themselves.
Autumn Wahlberg is the lead editor of The Laker Anchor. By helping students with article ideas, she said, “It’s fun to help collaborate with other classmates to come up with story ideas.”
There are a variety of different types of articles: opinion, sports, school news, lists, ect. Students interview teachers, students, and other staff to get information about their article.
Alex Sinn, who teaches the class, said, “I love that the yearbook is not just another school project, but a real product that we are offering to the community. It’s exciting to see it go from blank pages to being filled with so many creative designs, photos, and stories. The students really lead all of the learning, and the class is like a business, with real deadlines, real customers, and a real audience.”
A new addition to the class, many show excitement to contribute to the podcast. Whether the topic is about the school, things happening outside the school, or even brainrot, students are given the opportunity to contribute their opinion to the podcast streamed on Spotify.
Finally, something that we do occasionally during class is to go on “ad days.” During these days, we get to leave during yearbook class and try to sell ads to different businesses. These businesses get a section at the end of the yearbook that helps us pay for the book.
