On a recent Friday, 45 Lakers showed up to school in suits, dresses, and heels, and headed off to take on competition.
The Business Professionals of America on Jan. 9 impressed at the regional competition, held at Davenport University in Grand Rapids, with performances that led to nearly half of them qualifying for the state conference in March.
The club generated impressive results after their run at regionals. Many teams and individuals placed first and second, and overall, Spring Lake will be sending 22 individuals across 20 events to the state leadership conference.
Club adviser and business teacher Kelli Heavelin expressed her excitement for the success the club experienced at regionals and what’s to come at the State Leadership Conference in March.
Junior Autumn Wahlberg, a member of BPA, says, “I competed in the Broadcast News Production Team. My favorite part about competing in BPA this year was being able to apply creative elements in a fun event, ultimately producing an exciting news video.”
Business Professionals of America (BPA)—a club at Spring Lake High School that focuses on real-world business skills—is a highly competitive and popular club found at the high school.
While individual events tend to be a popular option, many students also take up the opportunity to participate in group events, which offer a whole new world of competition. Student projects ranged from global market to prepared speech to graphic design.
Offering over 90 competitive events, BPA includes a variety of topics, such as finance-based tests to presentations in front of judges. These variations allow students to sharpen their real-world business knowledge and apply it in mock situations. Students can choose what events they would like to compete in, limited to two events per student.
