Editorial: Spring Lake Community Shows Support for Families in Need

Spring Lake is a community committed to helping those in need; from organizing fundraisers to simply offering a helping hand, the community frequently comes together to help those facing hard times.

Throughout recent years, Spring Lake has started and shared several GoFundMe fundraisers to help out community members, including the Kleppe family, Spencer Cobb with “Swim for Spencer,” and, most recently, the Geyer family.

In 2022, the Kleppe family found out that mother Amy Kleppe was diagnosed with cancer. As a result, they reached out to the Spring Lake community for help with medical expenses. As a result of this GoFundMe, the family has received over $12,000 worth of support. When the GoFundMe came to light, it took the community by storm, as it was shared on social media platforms and published in several publications.

Unfortunately, Amy Kleppe passed away soon after the GoFundMe was posted. However, the community still came together by continuing to share her story and offering the family a helping hand as needed.

Halloween night that same year, a student and a swimmer for Spring Lake High School faced a terrible accident while driving, in which he was paralyzed due to a spinal injury. As a result, Spencer Cobb could no longer swim. The Cobb family faced the burden of his medical expenses, as he had to undergo several surgeries and medical procedures to get back into good health.

The community as a whole came together throughout this time, holding yet another fundraiser to support Spencer. Within the period that this fundraiser has been held, Spring Lake has donated up to $35,000 dollars.

Over the past week, Spring Lake has worked together to help another prominent family and community member. The Geyer family recently lost their mother, Vicki Geyer, a Jeffers Elementary teacher and dedicated member of the Spring Lake community. With the loss of the father, Tom Geyer, in 2012, the Geyer children have been left in a difficult place.

As a result, Jennifer Gwinnup, a Spring Lake High School teacher, came together to help the Geyer daughters by setting up a GoFundMe. The campaign  is focused on raising money for the Geyer’s school, sports, and life expenses. Within three days, the fundraiser has gained almost $60,000 dollars worth of support, almost tripling the initial goal.

Spring Lake is a community dedicated to helping others, specifically those in times of grief and emergency. As these fundraisers come to light, the community wastes no time showing its support by donating, sharing, and speaking out.

Community members frequently impress these families, contributing large sums of money and going above and beyond to offer a helping hand. Creating fundraisers like these allows the community to come together and form stronger bonds among its members. Spring Lake has created an impressive reputation for itself by offering generosity when people face hard times.
