As most fall sports come to an end, the girls cross country team launched what the team calls its “championship season,” where they enter their most important meets of the year, regionals and states.
The team qualified for the state meet with a 2nd place finish in regionals in late October, and placed 16th at the D2 State Championship on Saturday.
Coach Aaron Andres describes the championship season as “the end equation of a long formula which starts in the summer with base training, and ends with speed training for the competitive meets.”
In late October, the team began tapering their workouts to ensure they perform at their best when it’s most needed.
“It’s a process that we start doing the finer things, we taper down mileage, and we focus on sharpening speed and any areas we need to focus on,” Andres said.
The varsity runners express their excitement about these upcoming meets. Senior Meghan Guczwa said heading into the postseason, “I’m really hoping to make these last few weeks the best few, because it’s my final season.”
One of the most important factors in racing is the team, Guczwa said. “Our team is very tight-knit, and being together for the season has helped us improve in special ways,” she said.
After a long season of difficult, hot workouts, the girls cross country team got to watch all of their hard work pay off.
