Spring Lake’s runners don’t have to slow down over the winter.
High School Administrative Assistant Gera Peel, a former assistant coach for track and field, has started Velocity Track Club, a running club that allows students to stay in shape during the offseason and prepare for spring sports. The practices take place on Mondays from 3:15 to 4:15 pm in the Laker Athletic Center.
When asked what inspired her to start the club, Peel said, “Knowing that there are other clubs around us where kids have to travel far.” Spring Lake’s new addition of the fieldhouse provides a local, warm, and convenient spot for students to train.
Although most of the club members will be attending indoor track meets, the club emphasizes that it is open for anyone to join who wants to get faster and have fun.
With Peel’s longtime experience coaching, she is working with other coaches in the area to design the best workouts for her athletes. “Each workout will be catered to every individual. If they do hurdles, they will be doing something different from a pole vaulter,” Peel said.
Velocity track club athletes will be focusing on building muscle in the offseason, increasing speed, and improving form. Meghan Guczwa, a senior cross country and track runner, said the club will help her prepare for her final season. “I’m excited to improve to my full potential, and this club will definitely allow me to,” she said.
Velocity’s growing membership, including 38 athletes in the Schoology group so far, are eager to improve and grow as athletes with guidance from Coach Peel and Spring Lake’s new resources.
